2009 Chardonnay, La Grange Rouge, Vin De Pays D'oc
Grange Rouge's unique volcanic soils were formed one million years ago off the Med coast (near what's now Agde), when a geyser spurted ash and lava 1km into the air. Jean-Claude du Roure, the current owner, took over the vineyard from his parents in 1985. Respecting the land and the environment, he runs his vineyard on the principles of well planned effort and sustainable cultivation of the vines, limiting the use of pesticides, allowing the growth of grass, and using bark to keep down the growth of weeds. 2009 Touraine Sauvignon, Paul Buisse
Paul Buisse has 15 hectares of vines close by the charming town of Montrichard on the banks of the river Cher. Here he has established not only his own wine cellars, dug deep into the chalky cliffs, but has also developed a thriving negociant business, dealing in wines from all over the Loire Valley. Jacky Marteau's 'Domaine de la Bergerie' occupies some of Touraine's most enviable sites: south-facing, pebble-and-flint slopes beside the River Cher. Quality is paramount: low yields are encouraged by growing grass between vine rows, pruning is radical and leaves are plucked in summer to let the sun shine through. 2009 Quincy 'Les Grands Coeurs', Domaine Sylvain Bailly
Quincy is a tiny Loire appellation on the left bank of the Cher where dynamic Jacques Bailly and wife Marie-Helene cultivate a small parcel of Sauvignon and an even smaller plot of Pinot Noir. Jacques is best-known for his excellent Sancerres, but this exuberantly fruity Sauvignon deserves a wider audience. As the founder of Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay David Hoehnen's 'wine cred' is as high as it gets. Rather than rest on his laurels he has moved on and 'downsized' to a more hands-on operation with his daughter, Freya, as co-winemaker. There is a policy of minimal intervention in the vineyards where viticultural practices embrace old-fashioned 'common sense' farming philosophies, cultivating a system in which the soil and its organisms, along with plants, insects and animals, co-exist in a thriving equilibrium. 2008 'Miral' Grillo, Bruno Fina, Sicily
Bruno Fina spent the 1990's running Sicily's experimental cellar at Alcamo, applying radical techniques to Sicilian varieties in pursuit of their true vocation. He advised growers making plantings - so he knows where the best grapes are, and what they can do. His cellar, near Erice, was ready for the superb 2005 vintage. Grillo, hitherto reserved for the production of Marsala, shines bright here in deliciously crisp, fragrant, full-bodied form. Try it with tuna or swordfish steaks. (read more)
