2007 Merlot, Corte D'aibo, Emilia Romagna Igt
Corte d'Aibo ('aibus' is Latin for 'shelter') is smack dab in the middle of the beautiful Monteveglio Abbey regional park, a day's hike from Bologna. The monks left long ago, but treasured documents tell us that they bought several vineyard plots there in the sixteenth century. In 1989, production was endorsed as organic. 2007 Rondoletto, Domaine St Esteve, Vin De Pays De La Mediterranee
Acquired by the Français-Monier family in 1809, this honey-coloured property is one of few on the Massif d'Uchaux (east of Mont Ventoux, north of Orange) with deep underground cellars. Much has been made of this attractively-vaulted feature, which, like the rest of the place, is well-maintained and luxurious. A striking contrast, at times, with the stony, sandy terroir outside: Mistral winds fairly rip through the surrounding vines, forests and scrubland, and the sun beats down relentlessly in summer. Tear into some juicy steaks with this terrific, damsony-rich, tobacco and bramble fruit-scented Chilean red, from old, low-yielding Carmenère vines. A star of London's 2004 Wines of Chile tasting, it's a joint effort from Mariano Salas (who owns vineyards in Maipo's cool, dry Maria Pinto Valley) and Margaux-trained biodynamic winemaker Alvaro Espinoza. This wine is made for us by Bodega Muriel which is a relatively new cellar, founded in 1986 when Julian Murua took over his parents business in the town of Elciego in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The majority of the vineyards lie close by the river Mayor as do the cellars.
