2007 Gevrey Chambertin Villages, Domaine Armand Rousseau
A blistering hot April, was followed by a pretty dull summer, culminating in a beautiful late August throught to September. Charles Rousseau's wines show classic raspberyy and red fruit tones, with decent structure - for early drinking. His 07s will charm and please, whilst your 05 and 06s continue to evolve. (read more)

2004 Un, Deux, Trois, Seidelberg Estate
New Seidelberg winemaker Cerina De Jongh's CV reads encouragingly: top of her year at Elsenburg College, hired by high-profile Grangehurst and veteran of vintages the world over. She's thriving at this idyllic estate, founded in 1680 on the Paarlberg's southern slopes, whose rust-hued soils produce big reds with intense colour and up-front fruit. Very much the case here: a vivid Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc-Merlot blend, with near Port-rich sweet, spicy plum and blackberry flavours. (read more)

2008 Cuvee 2, Minervois, Hegarty Chamans
Red meat wine, with grip and power: big, dense baked fruit flavours, pepper and spice. Burgundian winemaker Samuel Berger had a baptism of fire in his first vintage at advertising mogul John Hegarty's Carcassonne estate, a state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly amphitheatre of vines facing the Montagne Noire. This succulent Grenache-Syrah- Carignan blend is aged in huge oak foudres. (read more)

2008 Marques De Borba Red, Jao Portugal Ramos, Alentejo
Jao Portugal Ramos is a one man dynamo who has created a substantial winery, some 250 hectare of his own vineyards with even more under contract, in the Alentejo that is one of the benchmarks of Portuguese wines. 2008 Valpolicella 'Corte Del Pozzo' Fasoli Gino, Veneto
Natalino Gino's father went 'green' twice over. First the herbicides he'd been advised to spray on his vineyards (planted by patriarch Amadio Gino in 1925) to the west of the Veneto's Soave region made him unwell. As a result, in 1980 he set out to achieve organic certification, finally succeeding ten years later. The Corte del Pozzo range is sourced from neighbouring vineyards which conform to the Fasoli's organic standards. (read more)

2008 Les Bastions Rouge, Cotes De St Mont
Cassis- rich black fruit aromas and a firm palate. Made by the ultra-reliable team at the Plaimont winery who have an admirable focus on polishing the finer characters of the region's local grapes, bringing intriguing styles to a wide audience. 2009 Beaujolais, Domaine Milhomme
One of those reds you can serve slightly cool - perfect summer drinking. The ripe summer fruit flavours excel with delicatessen meats. The Perrin family have been making wine for four centuries at their rural idyll near Ternand in southern Beaujolais. Their vineyards (scene of a medieval conflict involving 1000 men) spread out in a south-facing amphitheatre of flaking granite. Bernard Perrin remains modest despite his wines often being voted 'Best of the Vintage'. (read more)

2004 Grenache,'Gsm' Mitchell Estate, Clare Valley
If you're partial to the rich reds of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (or need a really big wine for hearty fare) -you might want to upgrade to this. 'GSM' stands for 'Grenache-Sangiovese-Mourvèdre', Australian shorthand for the classic blend of Châteauneuf. 2009 St Amour, Domaine Le Carjot
Voluptuous and mouthfilling, with juicy red fruit flavours and an appetisingly dry finish, this charming Beaujolais encapsulates the finer qualities of wines from the 'cru' village of Saint-Amour (one of ten quality enclaves to the north of the region). The locals would pair it with regional speciality the 'andouillette', which, to the uninitiated, might appear alarming; springy fermented offal squeezed into innocuous sausage skins.Regular gourmet sausages will do just as well. 2009 Malbec 'El Dominio', The Adnams Selection
Susanah Balbo is Argentina's winemaking guru and Pedro Marchevsky its pre-eminent viticulturalist so when the decided to get married and start their own domaine it seemed to Adnams that this was the perfect place to source a Malbec worthy of our own label. Although they have several sources of vineyards around the Mendoza region the majority of the Malbec for this wine comes from their 'Dominio del Plata' vineyard in the Lujan de Coyo district. At 980m altitude and composed of well drained, deep loam/clay soils, it produces wines of notable concentration. (read more)

2008 Santenay 'Charme', Domaine Bachelet Monnot, En Primeur 12 Bottles Per Case
The Bachelet brothers own 6 hectares of the 1er cru vineyard 'La Fussiere' in Maranges, which probably makes them the biggest land owners in this appellation. Their sons, Marc and Alix, have set out to rival them and rent vineyards from their fathers as well as others. They distinguish themselves by adding their mother's maiden name, Monnot, to their label. They started with 7 hectares in 2005 and now farm 13, including some of Madame Monnot's well-sited Puligny vineyards. (read more)

2008 Morellino Di Scansano, Serpaia, Maremma, Endrizzi
Subjects of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Endrici (Endrizzi in local dialect) family arrived in northern Italy in 1885 and established a formidable estate at the foot of the Dolomites. More recently, the Endrizzis descended from lofty Trentino to purchase Tuscan estate Serpaia. Application of biodynamic techniques has resulted in impressive wines like this. 2007 Chassagne Montrachet, Domaine Henri Germain
Roast duck (save the fat for roasting potatoes) is a winner with this ripe, pungent, raspberry, redcurrant and woodsmoke-scented Pinot Noir. Henri Germain acquired winemaking skills at his family's Château de Chorey-les-Beaune before setting up independently in 1973. Based in Meursault, he also owns vineyards further south having wed astutely (his wife is a Pillot of Chassagne) - and an able successor in son Jean-François (now running the estate). (read more)

2009 Chenas, Domaine Champagnon, Beaujolais
The lush, green, rolling hills of Beaujolais are home to many different styles, with surprising degrees of variation given the near complete domination of the Gamay grape. Ten 'cru' villages on granite hills to the north of the region are home to the most substantial wines, and Chénas is renowned for producing some of the longest-lived wines. This is youthful yet sturdy, with plenty of vibrant raspberry fruit. Lovely drinking with roast poultry or soft cheeses. (read more)

The vineyards lie immediately to the north of Beaune and opposite the hill of Aloxe Corton. Family owned, and run on organic principles, this has a hint of creamy oak wrapped around attractive black-fruit and strawberry tones. (read more)
