2005 Marques De Vargas Reserva, Rioja
Now into their fourth generation as winemakers, Rioja's Vargas family have wrought exponential success. Having amassed substantial vineyards and built a state-of-the-art winery, they've hired Bordeaux's famous Michel Rolland to improve quality even further. Production is limited to Reserva styles (unfiltered; aged in new oak for over a year) from pure Tempranillo. There's rich complexity of flavour here: cedarwood, cinnamon, cranberries, sloes and game. Grange Rouge's unique volcanic soils were formed one million years ago off the Mediterranean coast (near what's now Agde), when a geyser spurted ash and lava 1km into the air. 2008 Carmenere Gran Reserva, Casa Rivas, Maipo Valley
Tear into some juicy steaks with this terrific, damsony-rich, tobacco and bramble fruit-scented Chilean red, from old, low-yielding Carmenère vines. A star of London's 2004 Wines of Chile tasting, it's a joint effort from Mariano Salas (who owns vineyards in Maipo's cool, dry Maria Pinto Valley) and Margaux-trained biodynamic winemaker Alvaro Espinoza. Carmenère is a Bordeaux fugitive, so amenable to Alvaro's skills. Judicious oak-ageing has brought its finer points to the fore. Sauvignon. (read more)

The vineyards of Bio - Bio are located 500 km south of Santiago and are situated at an altitude of 75 metres above seal level. The vines are planted in the poor sandy soils, located on gentle slopes close to Bio-Bio River. Like Casablanca in the north, the vineyards of Bio-Bio are at the limit of wine production in Chile,due to the dangers of frost. The unique microclimate of Bio-Bio results in wine showing typical cool climate character, which is particularly evident in this tasty Pinot. (read more)

2008 Crozes Hermitage, Domaine Barret (Half Bottle)
Thoughtful Etienne Pochon is our touchstone for quality in the large northern Rhône appellation of Crozes-Hermitage, which surrounds Hermitage proper and yields lighter Syrah styles. Generations of Pochons have occupied the cobblestone-built medieval Château de Curson, but have only made their own wines, by eco-friendly methods, since 1988. Aged in large barrels, this supple, savoury wine has ripe redcurrant fruit and hints of liquorice, pepper and spice. Great with roast ham. (read more)
